June 15th was Alice’s first full day at home, and I filmed a bunch of it for her puppy blog — so you’ve got a lot to watch. 😄
The day started the way every puppy day does: out to potty first thing. And she nailed it — right spot, right yard. Small win, but with puppies, you celebrate everything.
From there it was a mix of short sessions, free time, and just… life happening around her. She got to play with Vida, lick a spoon (very serious enrichment 😂), and meet the barn cats. We did some marker cue training as well as some other stuff; she’s very good even with all the BCs milling around, which is great, because I don’t have to crate/rotate the adult dogs, and she gets to train with them around as a distraction from the beginning. George and I took her out to the backyard in the evening, which is its own little adventure when you’re just weeks old and everything is new.
On the training side, we did some short kitchen sessions working on her markers — yes and good — with the other dogs present. That’s intentional. I want her learning that those words mean something even when there’s activity around her. We also did some basement training and got her first introduction to the Dremel for nail care.
Sessions at this age are just a few minutes, tops. I’m not trying to teach her a bunch of behaviors — I’m building the foundation that makes everything else easier later. Here are some of my thoughts on this approach:
