Have You Ever Watched Yourself At The Startline?

When your dog falls apart at a trial, the useful question isn’t “what’s the next step in the plan.” It’s “what is DIFFERENT about the trial.”

Here’s one answer most of us would rather skip:

One of the things that’s different is YOU.

What actually changes between your startline at home and your startline at a trial

At home you walk out to your startline with a treat pouch on and a coffee sitting on a jump wing somewhere. You set your dog up. You lead out. You’re not really thinking about any of it.

Are you quietly panicking at a trial?

At a trial you’ve been in the building since seven. You’ve walked the course four times and you’re still running the opening in your head while you’re setting him up. Your hand on his collar is a little tighter than it was at home. You lead out faster. And right before you release him, you stop breathing.

Your dog has spent his entire life reading your body. He had ALL of that figured out before you got past the second jump standard.

I’m not telling you this so you’ll feel bad. Your dog isn’t broken, and neither are you. Tension at the line isn’t a character flaw, it’s what happens when something matters to you. I’ve been to the World Championships nine times and I still catch myself holding my breath on a lead-out. Knowing about it doesn’t make it go away.

Your dog can only be as steady as you are.

So here’s the thing to actually try, and it’s ONE thing, not a program.

Breathe out before you release. That’s it. Not a breathing exercise, not a routine. One exhale, on purpose, right before you say the word.

And then the part that’s going to be a little uncomfortable: video yourself at the line at home, and video yourself at the line at a trial. Watch YOURSELF, not the dog. Many of us have never actually seen the difference, and it tends to be bigger than we think.
